F-15 collision
It was an accident, pure and simple. This was a combat simulation and the action is very fast, just as in a real combat scenario. Senses can get overwhelmed by G forces, control inputs and maintaining visual contacts. Midair collisions have happened and will continue to happen. It's part of the territory.
Another case-in-point: In the 10/95 issue of British publication "Air Forces Monthly", 'Write Offs', pg. 61:
Aug 10 1995, USAF: 1st FW & 33rd FW; 2x F-15C Eagles; Gulf of Mexico; 2 OK. Collided in mid-air during air combat manoeuvres over the Gulf of Mexico near Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Both aircraft managed to land safely at Eglin AFB, Florida, without injury to either pilot, although the extent of the damage to the aircraft has not been confirmed. One of the F-15Cs was from the 1st FW at Langley AFB, Virginia, and the other from the 33rd FW resident at Eglin.
I saw a TV news clip once of an F/A-18 landing with part of its left wing and its nose cone both entirely missing after a midair collision. Military pilots are trained to accept this as simply the risk of combat, combat or even simulated. I agree with some of the posts: It's time to lay off the blame game.
